Coronavirus (COVID-19) Relief Laws Overview

Posted 03.23.20

In response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, President Trump signed two bills into law that will provide paid leave to employees for reasons related to the disease.

The two new laws are the “Emergency Family and Medical Leave Expansion Act” and the “Emergency Paid Sick Leave Act”. These laws will take effect no later than 15 days of passage and the leave benefits will expire on December 31, 2020.

The “Emergency Family and Medical Leave Expansion Act” allows for 12 weeks of partially compensated FMLA leave to care for a child whose school or child care facility has been closed due to COVID-19.

The “Emergency Paid Sick Leave Act” requires employer to provide 80 hours of paid sick time to employees in certain, specified circumstances including quarantine, when an employee has symptoms of COVID-19 or when the employee’s child’s school or childcare facility is closed due to COVID-19.

The Compliance Bulletin linked below provides details that employers need to become familiar with these two new laws.
