Anthem Cigna Merger Challenged by US Government

As reported by the New York Times and the Union Leader, US Attorney General Loretta Lynch announced the federal government filed lawsuits to block the proposed merger between Anthem/Cigna, and a similar merger between Aetna/Humana.
“If these mergers were to take place, the competition among insurers that has pushed them to provide lower premiums, higher-quality care and better benefits would be eliminated,” Attorney Lynch stated.
In response, Anthem stated they were “fully committed” in challenging the lawsuit. Aetna and Humana said they plan “to vigorously defend the companies’ pending merger.”
