Some Lawmakers Want ACA Exemption

Posted 04.26.13

Quickly squashed as a possible exemption

The lead article in the April 26, 2013 NAHU Newswire covers how congressional leaders are discussing how to mitigate some sections of the healthcare reform law that directly impact them. In 2014, lawmakers and their staff will be required to purchase their coverage through the exchanges. It is reported that Representative Pelosi (D-CA) was looking at possibly changing language in the bill addressing this requirement. Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) issued a statement to the contrary stating that members of Congress should experience all the benefits of the Affordable Care Act.

Lawmakers are uncertain if the federal government will continue to pay part of their premiums if they purchase coverage in the exchanges next year. Additionally, a bill was introduced to require the president and his cabinet to purchase coverage through the exchange.
