Groups Warn About Bare Bones Insurance Policies

ACA regulation wording may have loophole

There are concerns that minimal insurance policies could expand under the Affordable Care Act. Policies that exclude benefits such as hospitalization have been referred to as “bare bones” policies and unless last minute regulation is enacted, these policies could still be offered to employees. Traditionally offered by restaurant chains and retailers, the fines could be less costly than offering a better policy.

Also reported in the August 26, 2013 NAHU Newswire lead story is the uncertainty of states being able to have the computer systems up and running to meet the Marketplace October 1 deadline. It is estimated that upwards of seven million people will access marketplace portals for 2014 health insurance.
